Serving our community.....

...one meal at a time. The Hawaiian Acres community has been blessed with a wonderful weekly lunch program for EVERYONE. Miki Asejo and her group from Pualele Ministries has committed to bringing lunch to the Hawaiian Acres every Saturday from 12 noon 'till 2 pm. I sat down to lunch with Miki last week to talk about Pualele Ministries and their mission. We had stew on rice, salad and cake for dessert.

Every Sunday morning for the past 10 years, Pualele Ministries has been serving meals at the Mo'oheau Bandstand in Hilo. Thousands of meals at NO CHARGE have been served and the program has seen great success, so Miki says "Now it's time to expand". Her search for a suitable site brought her to a number of possible locations but the Hawaiian Acres Community Center had the "feel of community" and that was the deal maker for her.

The Pualele Ministries crew

They brought enough food for 125 people and served 22 meals...the same number of meals served at the first Mo'oheau event 10 years ago. In addition to bringing food every Saturday, they plan on bringing clothing and other items that can help those in need in our community. We are very happy to have the Pualele Ministries involved with our community and will do whatever we can to promote this wonderful community effort. I would love to see 100+ meals served every Saturday at our community Center!

I asked the group what we can do to help their program which is supported almost entirely from donations, and the response was "almost anything", but the biggest cost for this project is for serve-out products like paper plates, cups, utensils and napkins. I hope that everyone that reads this posting will come down to the Community Center Saturday to have lunch with the folks offering this great community service and find out how they can help.....maybe bring some paper plates or napkins or something.  At least drop by for lunch and give Aloha to some very cool people..... helping people.

Because of my Punaverse and Maku'u Market websites, I get to write stories about many community service projects and this is one that I am very much in support of. For donations of any kind or quantities, in Hilo, call Miki at 808-430-1554, and in Puna, please call Keith at 808-968-9881.
